Di-Hydro: MAS increasingly European

The European Di-Hydro project for optimising hydroelectric plants has kicked off: 13 partners from 7 countries, with MAS working on the modelling of hydro cascades and on optimisation algorithms.

Work has started on the project Di-Hydro, co-funded by the European Union under its research and innovation programmes. The project aims to optimise hydroelectric plants.

The kick-off, on 4 and 5 October 2023, was hosted by the team at CERTH (Centre for Research and Technology Hellas) in Thessaloniki, with 13 companies from 7 European countries. MAS took part in all the working sessions of the two-day event.

The aim of Di-Hydro is to create an integrated system that, starting from field measurements and moving through forecasting algorithms and artificial intelligence, makes it possible to optimise hydropower plants and make energy even more sustainable.

“The project is of great interest to MAS from many points of view. The first is innovation: we can improve our tools and engage with new technologies and data, such as those from field sensors on environmental and water quality.”

Pietro Marzaroli, Di-Hydro Project Manager for MAS

“In some cases the physical modelling of the plants is very similar to river systems we have already implemented in IDRO, our software for optimising hydropower plants. The real challenge will be introducing new constraints and objectives, for example environmental or water-quality ones.”

Nicola Crippa, senior modeler, MAS

Enrico Milani, Head of Sales & Delivery for IDRO, expects value on three fronts: the network with companies operating in hydropower; the product IDRO, thanks to expertise that helps to better understand customers' needs; and new opportunities with the project's producers, and joint offers with some partners.

“The project is ambitious and complex, partly because of the wide variety of parties involved. It will be three intense and stimulating years: if we manage to improve our products or find new customers, we will be able to say we have achieved an excellent result.”

Matteo Alberti, CEO of MAS Consulting
